ABOUT US
Mayors for social housing is a network of mayors, city councilmembers, and local elected officials who believe that local government can have a more direct role in creating affordable housing for all. We advocate for social housing so that every Californian has the right to a high quality affordable home.
Housing insecurity isn’t a new or partisan issue. All throughout the country, the price of housing and rent is skyrocketing. In California, 2 in 5 households pay 30% or more of their income on housing, and 1 in 5 pay 50% or more.
What is Social Housing?
Social housing is mixed-income housing that is owned and operated by public agencies. Social housing is housing built for the social good.
Social housing works!
In countries all throughout the world, social housing is commonplace. From Vienna to Hong Kong, social housing has kept supply high, and rents low. Even in the United States, Montgomery County in Maryland has found ways to make it happen. But less than 1% of all housing in the United States is publicly owned.
